Ralston Jansz

Ralston's a rare DJ in the Melbourne Soul Club DJ Team - rare because he's so special.

Ralston's from the tough inner city and grew up in West London, listening to Reggae and Soul music within a long stone's throw of the famous Paddington Flyover. He can't sleep these days without the hum and drone of the traffic past his bedroom window, nor the roar of the occassional 747 (every two minutes) just scraping over the top of the house as it completes its approach into London Heathow. Insomniac, No, pleased he moved dowunder - Ohhhhh Yes.

He still lives breaths and listens to the same music styles but has mellowed out into a very varied taste in music and will listen to most genres (including classical). One definite exception is heavy metal - "you can keep that" - has says without skipping a 4/4 beat.

I was born in Ceylon, went to London in 1960 when I was two years old as a result I love 60's and 70's popular music. Since I heard my first Reggae songs one of which was "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da" by the Bedrocks, a West Indian band from Leeds (reached number 20 in the UK Singles Chart in 1968) "Viva Bobby Joe" and "Baby Come Back" the Equals, when I was only ten years old I began my love affair with Reggae and even in those tender years my other favourites were tunes like "Sitting On The Dock Of The Bay" and "Walk Away Renee".

The first 45 I bought was "Double Barrel" Dave & Ansell Collins when I was around 13 years old and my first LP was "I'm Still Waiting" Diana Ross at around 14 years old. I loved the Monkees too of course but who didn't live in the sixties and grow up liking the Monkees (or maybe that is just me - haha).

Not much more to say about me except what you see is what you get, no hidden agendas just want to enjoy good music with like minded people - after all that is what makes the world a better place. Well, I think so ! ! ! !

Ralston's all time favourites play list is:

  • Motown and Soul
  • Santana
  • Mid - late 60's and 70's Reggae and Ska including British Two Tone and Ska
  • Some country.Some classical stuff
  • There is a time and a place for everything except heavy metal!
