Steve Cowburn

Steve's the current lead man in the Melbourne Soul Club DJ Team.

He's been spinning tunes for, well, longer than he'll admit to us and he's still as enthusiastic as he was back when he was 15 and just getting into finding Soul music brought him deep happiness.

As well as soul music bringing Steve happiness, Marureen, his stunning wife (and light of his life), who is also the secret-sauce ingredient behind the success of the Melbourne Soul Club encouages him to give of his best.

Steve's from the UK originally, Lancashire actually and proud of it. He's spent many dance filled evenings as a DJ there, making people happy by spinning tunes at the parties, weddings, club nights and village halls around the UK - before moving to Australia in 1980.

Early influences for Steve came from attending local hot spots in and around Leyland where he grew up. Such places as the Preston Top Rank, Blackpool Mecca, Cranberry Fair Darwin, ‘The Vic’ Chorley, Leyland Public Hall Monday Night Soul Night, Lode Star Ribbleton, Howard Arms Chorley, Wigan Pier to name but a few.

Steve's private playlist covers an eclectic range of music with basically no genre – OK, perhaps heavy metal is the exception. No space in the record box for that stuff - unfortunately.! His long-standing favourite however is 70’s Soul and Motown. He won't admit this to everyone but a little sprinkling of quality Disco choons and the odd sparkly outfit is also appreciated.

Steve's all time favourites play list is:

  • Barry White – anything, the man can do no wrong
  • Love Unlimited – ‘Walking in The Rain’
  • Real thing – "Can’t get by without you"
(saw them live in 1978 in a marquee at a Village Fete in ‘Heage’ Derbyshire where his brother lives
  • Geri Granger – ‘I go to pieces’
  • Kiki Dee – ‘Magic Carpet Ride’

Recent additions to the favourites list are:

  • Lisa Stansfield – ‘8-3-1’ (newly discovered thanks to ‘Lambchop’)
  • Frank Popp Ensemble – "Hip Teens Don’t Wear Blue Jeans"
(discovered as played by a WA DJ at the national Scooter rally in Daylesford 2010)
  • Edwin Starr – ‘My weakness Is You’ (also newly discovered thanks to ‘Lambchop’)
