'What's Going On?...'
(thank you Marvin Gaye)

COMING UP.... 17th March 2012

With the first meeting Soul Night done-and-dusted; What a fantastic evening. We've started the year with a fizz and a bang...! Lets keep it going... March 17th..see you there...

11th February 2012

Outstanding, Superb, Great and Wonderful..! (and an "it were alright 's'pose" from one of our dry humoured english northerner's) which is the highest commendation we could get, made it clear that a latent demand for our Soul Night built over the summer - and we thank everyone who came along.

From the new to the regulars, to the girls-night-out hen-party (thank you girls...!), we all had a great night with the dance floor filled to sometimes overflowing for every DJ. Every one of our six DJ sets was superb and showed they all care deeply about bringing the best of the new, the old and the well loved music to the Soul Club for us all to enjoy and dance to.

The expanding number of faces show we are definitely doing it right and we want more people to come along - so tell your friends and neighbours - word of mouth, google and facebook is what's now driving our new growth. If you've mentioned us to anyone - Thank you. An outstanding night to start the year...we look forward to seeing you all again in March...on the 17th. ..and in April ..and in May....

19th November 2011

It was great to see a solid turn out for our last meeting of the year. Prizes all round and the raffle caused a few laughs or seven. Some great music played as always and some special platters spun by our guest DJ - who almost didn't make it. A quick Sat-Nav lookup and all was well. Cries for More, More... (and some smart alec cries "less") at the end of the night, lots of happy chatter and no-one wanted to go home. Have a great summer everyone and see you on February 11th at the same place, same time.

22 October 2011

We all love to see new faces and meet lovers of soul music - whatever the genre - regardless of where you come from, North, South, East or West, Soul Music is universal - and we all love it. Thank you if you came along to our penultimate Soul Night for 2011. If not, we want to a note from your Mum explaining why next time please :-) You missed many classic and great choons from every one of the DJ's (Andy, Ralston, Steve C, Gail and Mick, Steve B) and a beautiful social evening of music and good friends, fun and laughter.

A special thank you to our special supporters - Jill and Rob, and Hilary and Ron - you are generous to a fault. Thank You...

Hope to see every one of you for our last 2011 meeting on 19th November and to meet our special guest DJ and some very special music from the largest soul music collection in Australia.

17 September 2011

Thank you if you came along to our Five and one twelfth birthday. Thanks to our new guests - Welcome Along.! Some classic and great choons from every one of the DJ's and a quality evening of music and good friends. A special thank you to our special supporters - Rob the Butcher for the Meat Tray door prize and Ron & Hilary for a Raffle prizes. The prizes were luvverrly, ....slurp ...lick ...chomp.

Maureen has sent Young rookie Andrew to stand in the naughty corner for slipping in a little of Bette Midler's Boogie-Woogie-Bugle-Boy into his modern soul set, his curve ball - just to check everyone was listening. No gold star for him this month..!! The evening was saved by some classic sets from our Elaine Motown Miller, Reggie Ralston, The Smith Twins, DJ Geoff and topped off with extra icing by Snowy Bardsley. This month Sultan of Soul Steve surveyed from the sidelines propping up t' bar.

We hope to see you new guests and all of you back together soon - get it in your diary, calendar, organiser or PDA - for October 22nd. Same time, same channel.

20 August 2011 - 5th Anninversary

Great sounds, big crowd, packed dance floor = big fun at Melbourne’s home of Soul.

“Packed to the Rafters” is the only way to describe it. Definitely not a night to forget the deodorant spray! Over 100 guests, sponsors and DJ’s packed into the Bayswater ‘Top Rank’ RSL for our 5th Anniversary Bash, and what a bash!

Ten past and present DJ’s on the decks, spinning all those classic Soul tracks that have made the Melbourne Soul Club so successful. DJ’s, in order of appearance, were: Andrew ‘lambchop’ Waller, Elaine ‘Motown’ Miller, Sam ‘Diana’ Ross & Mark ‘Cool Cat’ Coulter, Mick ‘Mad Pom’ White, Brian ‘Dick Smith’ Cunningham, Ralston ‘Reggae’ Jansz, ‘The Soul Twins’ Mick & Gail Smith, Steve ‘Sultan of Soul’ Cowburn, and Steve ‘Snowy’ Bardsley.!

Many thanks to our sponsors and supporters who have contributed prizes, their time or, services to make the fantastic night so memorable. Thank you to:

  • Jill & Rob the Butcher

  • Ron & Hillary Gendall of Chocobean

  • Graham & Margaret Wilkie

  • Elaine Miller

  • Andrew Waller

  • Steve Bardsley

It was especially good to see lots of new and also young faces. We hope we have sold you on Soul music and that you will be back to visit again! It’s a tough act to follow but we will do it all again next month – September 17th – same place, same time. We'll see you when you get there...

16 July 2011

Another top night at the Bayswater ‘Top Rank’ RSL with no less than 7 DJ’s rocking the decks. Virgin DJ and new MSC webmaster Andrew ‘lambchop’ kicked the night off with his own brand of mellow jazz soul. Following Andrew we chased the night away with Elaine ‘Motown’ Miller, returning to the decks after a short absence, Ralston Jansz, Brian Heart, Jeff Evans, Steve C all kept the floor alive and stepping and finally on the decks the grand master Steve ‘Snowy’ Bardsley. A happy group of chattering soulies left as the last tune faded away, all looking forward to next month and our 5th Birthday celebration.!

18 June 2011

Yet another stormin' night at The Bayswater RSL with, dare it be said, an even better mix of Motown, Soul and Northern music. It's wonderful to see yet more new faces, as well as our loyal regulars. A special mention for Mick White, past apprentice DJ, and his wife Lisa who made a long overdue appearance and quickly got back into the groove.

Next month we'll see ‘Elaine “Motown” Miller’ back on the decks.

Also next month we will introduce a ‘Door Prize’. For your $5 entry you'll be given a ticket in 2 parts – keep one half and put the other in the draw-box. The winner will be drawn at raffle time, mid-way through the evening session.

14 May 2011

A packed turn out on Saturday night. Great to see some more new and also young faces, plus some others returning to the best place for music - some that we haven't see in a couple of months. Welcome Back..!! Special mention to Graham and Maggie returning after a long absence and, true to form, Graham won the raffle as well..!

Some quality sets from Brian and Jeff, plus Gail and Mick with their rare Northern set. Here’s hoping Andrew from Echuca can still walk after a few high kicks, spins and a very brave splits..!!

A new face behind the decks this month with Ralston, who did a cracking job of making everyone happy with his varied set. Steve Cowburn MC'd the whole event and Steve Bardsley kept hips gyrating mid evening. Brian hosted the last set and played the Northern Soul classic "I'm On My Way" as the last tune - as we all look forward to next month.

16 April 2011

A lovely night on Saturday, good numbers and great to see a few new faces - welcome. Great sets from all the DJ's We kicked off the night with Motown and headed back in time to some Northern Soul and finally came up to date with Steve's Soul-Surrender.!

Listen out for some special and very rare Northern Soul next time.

19 March 2011

Terrific night on Saturday, super turn out and great to see quite a few new faces. Usual quality sets from Radio Port Philip DJ Brian Heart and Radio Casey DJ Jeff Evans. Elaine 'Motown' Miller kicked off the night and Steve Cowburn hosted the final set. Newby to MSC 'Mark' rattled off a great Northern set that had the floor full in the middle.

Next Month Gail Smith from West Gippsland Community Radio 3BBR FM and 'Royston' long past MSC DJ will each be hosting a set.

14 February 2011

Super start to 2011 and great to see the regular MSC crowd out in strength and quite a few new members too! Timeless sets from Steve C, Steve B, Radio Port Philip DJ Brian Heart, Radio Casey DJ Jeff Evans.

Steve B will be missed for the next two MSC nights as he and Elizabeth take off on a world jolly soon - no matter the show will continue next month on March 19th.

29 November 2010

Fantastic final night for 2010! Super sets from Elaine 'Mod' Miller, Radio Port Philip DJ Brian Heart, Radio Casey DJ Jeff Evans and of course regular DJ's Steve Cowburn and Steve 'Snowy' Bardsley.

No nights planned for January but we are back bigger and better in 2011 - check out the Calendar page for the monthly date through to June 2011

26 October 2010

Great night on Saturday despite relatively small crowd - what we lacked in numbers we made up for in quality! Radio Casey DJ Jeff Evans played his first set with us and got the mix just right. Jeff and Brian Heart will be back next month playing their brand of the music we love.

Sadly we said farewell to regular DJ Michael White who has had to call it quits, for the present at least. Michael worked tirelessly for MSC for several years and will be sorely missed.

Next Month is the last for 2010 so put it in your diary and lets take out 2010 with a bang!

This Friday we head to the Acorn - great music and great food!

12 September 2010

Great night on Saturday! 3RPP Radio DJ Brian Heart joined regular DJ's Steve Coburn and Steve Bardsley for 6 sets of Motown, Soul and Northern favourites.

Really nice to see a few new faces - hope you come again soon!

Only two more Bayswater RSL nights left in 2010. Next month is October 23rd followed by November 27th.

For October we will be joined on the decks by Casey Radio DJ Jeff Evans and regular supporter Ron Gendall.

17 August 2010

Bit of a quiet night at The Acorn on Saturday. Lots of quality requests but most punters happy to sit and listen.

Next up the Bayswater RSL on September 11th. Should be a big one. Sadly Keith Sutcliffe announced the closure of SITS during the week so we hope to see SITS devotees at the RSL. Support it or lose it!

26 July 2010

Two fantastic nights at The Acorn last weekend! Friday followed the typical Soul night however we had a few very knowledgeable guests that made some great requests - songs you don't hear often but are absolutely fantastic - will certainly be a feature of future nights

Saturday turned out more like a 70's disco night than a soul night but this is what the dancers wanted and boy did they dance!

No Bayswater night in August but we are back at the Acorn on August 14th. Also SITS is on before then on July 31st.

21 June 2010

Great turnout on Saturday at the Bayswater RSL Motown Soul night – thanks for your support!

For those that were there you may have noticed a few disruptions early on in the night. Since our previous night the RSL has installed a decibel meter that monitors noise levels and turns off the power if the noise level exceeds a certain level (which we found to be quite low), presumably because of complaints from local residents. We don’t believe our nights are excessively loud and eventually we were able to turn the meter off but not before it caused several interruptions early on. Needless to say we will be speaking with the RSL management about the use of this meter soon. If they enforce the meter we will be looking for a new venue.

15 June 2010

OK so its a bit cool outside this time of year. No excuses. toss off the granny blanket and get yourself down to the Bayswater RSL this coming Saturday for our regular Motown Soul night.

A couple of additional dates for your diary - Friday July 23rd and Saturday 24th. The Acorn is putting on 'Christmas In July' events on both these nights featuring the Melbourne Soul Club special blend of classic Motown, Soul and Northern Soul. Traditional Christmas menu, warm atmosphere and great music! The Saturday event is full but some spots still available for Friday.

12 April 2010

Fantastic night at The Acorn last Friday. Great turnout, wonderful food and classic Motown - what a combination!. We will definitely be holding similar nights at The Acorn in the not too distant future - stay tuned!

No rest for the wicked  - back to the Bayswater RSL this coming Saturday!

31 March 2010

Our special night at The Acorn is just round the corner (April 9th). With winter drawing in you can expect a warm cozy atmosphere coupled with great music. The Acorn hosts Mal & Aileen put on a great selection of fantastic food at very reasonable prices. It is a popular venue so its best to book if you intend arriving early for dinner.

15 February 2010

Great start to the New Year with our first 2010 night last Saturday. Great to see our regulars and a few new faces.

The next regular night at the Bayswater RSL is March 20. This will be followed by a special night at The Acorn on April 9th. The Acorn is a great venue, serves fantastic food and has a wonderful cozy atmosphere courtesy of the owners Mal and Aileen. Best to book if you intend arriving early for dinner.

If you are going to the Motown concert at Rod Laver arena on Tuesday Feb 16 look out for our promotional flyer on your car windscreen. If you get the chance spread the word about our club and promote our upcoming nights.

2nd November 2009

Super night on Saturday with quite a few new faces who found us via the PBS radio station and the Lambretta Scooter web site. Many thanks to those organisations for promoting MSC.

For those discerning MSC members looking for an exclusive and rare present for their loved ones this Christmas - look no further. The new MSC patch is now available and the price is very competitive - its free!! Just ask Steve or Mick and you too could be sporting one of these 'destined to be' collectors item.

20th October 2009

Dates for 2010 have been changed. Due to several clashes in 2009 we have decided to change from the last Saturday of the month and have selected dates that are free from clashes with other events. Check out the Calendar page for details.

29th September 2009

Only a small gathering last Saturday partially because of the crappy weather and school holidays but also being on the night of the AFL Grand Final no doubt some of our patrons were otherwise disposed. It did highlight the need to review future Motown Night dates to try and avoid holidays and major events. While we have booked in for next year on the last Saturday of each month we will probably be changing this where there is a clash - stay tuned.

27th July 2009

Great to see a number of the 59 club members at Bayswater on Saturday. The 59 club are vintage motorcycle enthusiasts (Rockers) similar to the Crusaders Scooter Club (Mods). Anyone who has seen the movie Quadrophenia (or lived through the era) will know about the Mods & Rockers.

On October 25th 2009 a modern day reenactment of the famous Brighton clash of the Mods and Rockers, as depicted in Quadrophenia, will be staged. Vintage Scooters and Motorcycles will be on display as well as their similar aged albeit somewhat less preserved riders.

Details on the Mods vs. Rockers Flyer HERE!!!

20th July 2009

We have a small number (lets call it a Limited edition) MSC cloth patch as shown below. They would look great on your M54 Fishtail Parka while riding you Lambretta LI 150 to Bayswater RSL. Or you could sew one onto that nasty stain on your favourite Polo Shirt. Either way if you would like one and will put it to good use just ask Steve or Mick - no charge either!

1st July 2009

Another well attended night last Saturday. Those in attendance were privileged to see the birth of a new DJ - 'Elaine' who brought along a few of her favourite 45's (some with the original price still on the sleeve - how much is 2/6?) for us all to enjoy.

Elaine's better half Kevin was not present to see her performance courtesy of an illness - hope your feeling better Kevin and can make the next night.

Speaking of the next night - usual location starting at 7.30 p.m on Saturday July 25th. Write this date on the calendar and don't forget to tell all your friends, we're always happy to see new members.

18th May 2009

Well only two weeks to the next night and once again we will be back to full strength with Mick ‘Mr Motown’ White returning from his Northern Adventure and also Steve 'Snowy' Bardsley back with his own mixture of classic Northern and Classic Soul.

Once again we encourage anyone to bring along their selection or requests and share them with us all.

Our next night is at the usual location starting at 7.00 p.m on Saturday May 30th write this date on the calendar and don't forget to tell all your friends, we're always happy to see new members.

Oh, and if you’d like us to reserve a table for your party please email us in advance and we’d be happy to set one aside for you.

20th April 2009

Only a short break from the March night and in the middle of the Easter School holidays but still a quality group of soul lovers turned out to the Bayswater RSL. Steve C was flying solo on the decks as  Steve B was at a Crusader member birthday party and Michael (and family) are still on holiday 'up North'.

A regular member to the night Elaine, asked if she could share some of her favourite tracks with the other MSC members. Absolutely! In fact we would welcome all MSC members share their favourite tracks with the MSC family - why not bring them along to the next night and take over the decks for a spot?

A long break to the next night some 6 weeks away on May 30th - see you then!

10th February 2009

A great start to the New Year with our first Motown Soul night for 2009 which also saw the welcome return to the decks of Steve B and Stew after a few months absence. We received lots of requests on the night which will go towards developing a members play list for use at future nights. More requests always welcome.

Next night is not that far away on February 29th - see you then!

14th December 2008

Well folks last night was another great night for the Melbourne Soul Club.  We had about 35 members turn up, which was probably more than expected considering the plethora of other events we are competing against at this time of year.

As a special treat Maureen and Lisa went to extra effort to spruce up the tables with festive cheer, as well as cooking up some tasty hot treats later in the evening!  Thanks girls.

The DJ'ing was left up to the Maestro 'Steve' with some help from Mick 'Mad Pom' White.

We would like to thank all our members and guests for their support throughout the year.  We went through a bit of turmoil but I'm happy to say we've come out the other side stronger and more focused than before, and the numbers of members attending seems to verify this.  But don't hesitate to let us know if there is something we can do better, we're always happy to listen to suggestions.

Please all have a Safe and Happy Christmas and we look forward to seeing you all again in 2009.

17th November 2008

Great to see the regular MSC crowd out in strength on Saturday night. Steve Cowburn, sporting his prized Stevie Wonder' tee shirt and Michael White, sporting his prized 'Union Jack Tie and hat', took up the DJ duties for another memorable night.

Graham yet again won two raffle prizes and yet again graciously donated the second prize back to the pool.

Only one more night left in 2008. Plans are well advanced for the year ending December 13th night so make sure it is in your diary!

A new Newsletter is also available HERE!!!

8th October 2008

Official launch of the web site just complete and we are already receiving feedback on the site and 'Mailing List' and 'Playlist' requests.

This is a site for our members to use to provide feedback, good or bad, on the club so we can further improve. Don't be shy let us know what you think or want to see at future nights. Send us an email to info@melbournesoulclub.com

7th October 2008

A great night last Saturday with just over 50 Motown Soul lovers making the pilgrimage to Bayswater RSL. Steve C and Steve B were joined by 'Stew' and apprentice DJ Mick 'Mad Pom' White on the console for another great night. The Motown raffle prize of a Tamla Motown Tie clip, Cuff Links and Bar Runner was a great hit taken out by Graham who also won a second prize but kindly put it back in the pool (as did Mick BTW).

Only two more nights left in 2008. Next month is November 15th followed by December 13th. We are planning something a little special for the December night so make sure it is in your diary!
